Decorative Wall Coating Primer: A Buyer’s Guide

Choose a decorative wall coating primer as part of a named coating system, after confirming the wall substrate and the intended finish. A primer that controls absorption on plaster is not automatically suitable for every existing painted surface or decorative material. For a bulk order, ask the finish supplier to specify the preparation products, application sequence and conditions in writing.

The purchasing decision is whether the proposed primer and finish have been accepted together on the intended substrate. If an importer wants to buy primer locally, agree the substitute and a trial before ordering the finish. Keep the resulting system record with the quotation so a later delivery does not silently change the preparation.

Three numbered stages: wall substrate, specified preparation, and decorative finish
Original schematic: 1 substrate, 2 specified preparation, 3 decorative finish. Simplified sequence, not to scale; preparation may require more than one product. Not a product photograph or test result.

Which job must the decorative wall coating primer do?

Do not compare products by the word “primer” alone. A transparent consolidating product and an opaque intermediate coat can serve different purposes. Kerakoll’s primer and base-coat catalogue separates these categories; a supplier may specify more than one preparation step.

Preparation requirement What to ask the supplier What is not yet established
Uneven absorption across the wall Which primer is specified for this substrate and repair material? That the same dilution suits every area
Surface that needs consolidation What preparation is required, and which remaining surface condition is acceptable? That primer can make loose material sound
Intermediate coat before a texture finish Is a separate base coat required, and which product reference? That any general-purpose wall primer can replace it
Background colour under the finish Must the preparation coat have an agreed shade? That a colourless product will provide hiding

Treat this table as a question list, not a product prescription. San Marco’s MARCOTHERM PRIMER technical sheet describes absorption control and requires suitably prepared surfaces. That supports asking about the wall condition; it does not prove compatibility with a Montelise finish.

Identify the wall beneath the sample finish

Send the supplier the substrate type, its age or preparation history, existing coating details and intended indoor or outdoor use. A sample made on a clean board does not document the condition of an older project wall. Include photographs of repairs and affected areas, while recognising that photographs alone cannot establish moisture or adhesion.

For patched plasterboard, identify both the board face and joint or repair compound. For previously painted walls, provide the old coating reference if known and describe flaking or powdering. Ask which checks and remedial work are required before a primer trial; do not use a new finish to hide an unresolved substrate problem.

Ask for the selected system’s substrate limits and how they should be checked. The MARCOTHERM PRIMER technical sheet calls for preliminary checks on the actual surface when determining dilution and quantity. Those instructions concern that named product, not every primer. Obtain the current technical sheet for the actual proposed material rather than adopting a competitor’s limits.

If a linked technical sheet is unavailable, ask the supplier for a dated replacement before relying on a saved excerpt. Keep the product code, document revision and intended substrate together in the order record. A search-result summary or another product with a similar name is not a substitute for the selected system’s instructions.

Put the primer and finish on one system schedule

Start with the intended decorative material from the Product Center, then ask for its complete preparation schedule. Record the product reference for each required layer, its purpose, colour where relevant, dilution instruction and application tool. Do not assume that every decorative system has exactly one primer and one finish.

Kerakoll’s Wallcrete Living specification, page 5 illustrates why a named sequence matters: it specifies a primer, a texturizing layer and a decorative coating. It is a brand-specific example, not a specification for another supplier’s products.

Keep touch-dry and recoat instructions separate. For example, the cited MARCOTHERM sheet gives different times for those two stages under stated conditions. Ask the selected supplier for the applicable recoat conditions and any limits when site conditions differ; do not schedule the next layer solely because the surface feels dry.

Include the technical-sheet revision and the finish sample code in the quotation attachment. For OEM and private-label orders, connect the customer-facing label to the supplier’s product reference so a packaging change does not obscure a formula or system change.

When can a locally sourced primer be substituted?

A local primer can be proposed for review, but its name or colour is insufficient evidence of compatibility. Send both suppliers the exact product identity, technical sheet and intended substrate. Ask the finish supplier to state whether the proposed combination is acceptable and what validation is needed.

Use a documented comparison agreed with the supplier and applicator:

  1. Identify the intended substrate and preparation, including any repaired areas.
  2. Prepare a reference area with the specified system and a separate area with the proposed substitute, where the supplier permits the trial.
  3. Record each product and batch, dilution, tool, application date and actual site conditions. Keep the finish and application method consistent for the comparison.
  4. Wait for the supplier-specified assessment stage. Review appearance and the agreed compatibility checks; define any test method and acceptance limits before testing.
  5. Retain the sample record and obtain a written decision identifying the exact approved combination and its scope.

This is a proposed procurement workflow, not a test standard. A visually acceptable small sample does not by itself establish long-term durability, suitability for another substrate or acceptance on the whole project. If the combination remains unresolved, keep it out of the confirmed order specification.

Order preparation materials separately from the finish

Ask for primer and finish quantities as separate quotation lines. Record whether a quoted rate refers to supplied concentrate or ready-to-apply material, and whether it covers one coat or the complete specified preparation. Confirm the dilution basis rather than adding an assumed amount of water.

Match each quantity to its own net pack size and round separately. The textured wall paint coverage guide explains unit and whole-pack calculations; its worked example is not a primer consumption rate. Confirm primer consumption on the actual substrate before finalising quantities.

Ask about shelf life, storage, dispatch timing and batch identification for every component. If primer is purchased locally, name who supplies it and who records its acceptance. A finish-only quotation should clearly identify the preparation items that the buyer must obtain separately.

Send these details for a matched-system quotation

  • Wall substrate, existing coating and repair materials, with indoor or outdoor exposure.
  • Intended finish reference, colour and sample code.
  • Required preparation products, or a request for the supplier’s proposed system.
  • Any local primer proposal, including exact product name and technical-sheet revision.
  • Project area, application method and planned delivery phases.
  • Trial records, open compatibility questions and agreed acceptance requirements.
  • Preferred net pack sizes, private-label needs and delivery destination.

Use the decorative coating manufacturer guide for the wider supplier assessment. Send Montelise these inputs to request a decorative wall coating primer and finish sample plan. Product suitability, quantities and commercial terms remain subject to confirmation for the selected system.
